Projects and Volunteers
Number of Projects: 54 - Number of Youth Volunteers: 5,170 - Project Highlights: Flint, MI
The girls from the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy, an afterschool program, celebrated Global Youth Service Day by collecting 110 lbs of food and $40 for the local food bank. Recognizing the importance of the food bank to the area's neediest residents, they spent time sorting food and stocking the shelves of the food bank's pantry, learning about poverty and homelessness in Flint, a city with one of the highest levels of unemployment in the United States.
Lead Agency Highlights: YouthVille Detroit - Detroit, MI
YouthVille Detroit focused their Global Youth Service Day efforts on the community surrounding their facilities. Located in the economically-depressed North End, this Lead Agency and its youthful constituents served in a variety of ways, including the building of a community garden that provides fresh food for people in the neighborhood and the cleanup of a long-neglected park so it could host poetry nights in the future. YouthVille Detroit’s projects were all youth-led, youth being responsible for the logistics and working together to drum up support in their neighborhood.
Lead Agency Highlights: MichiganCommunity Service Commission - Lansing, MI:
This year, the Michigan Community Service Commission partnered with Impression 5 (a local science museum) and the Board of Water and Light (a local energy company) on the annual Adopt A River Clean-Up in Lansing, Michigan. This year more than 300 youth volunteers picked up nearly two tons of trash along the Grand River and surrounding areas while learning about the value of water quality and protecting and preserving Michigan’s waterways. In addition to learning about water, they planted trees and learned to recycle.
